Summary
Takeaways
Q & A

Highlights

[Music] How to carve in a duck stance with a heel-side turn.
This is Tsuyoshi, a snowboarding coach.
I'll explain some tips for a heel turn that many people have trouble with. Since I'm in a duck stance, I'd like to share with you some tips on how to do a heel side turn in a duck stance.
We will also explain the difference between a stance where both feet are angled forward and a duck stance.
If the binding angle is set differently, the way you apply pressure to the board will be different.
The edging method will be different.
A stance with both feet facing forward means that your body is facing the direction of travel.
The edge line is on your side,so
the edging looks like this.
If you do the same movement in a duck stance,
you won't be able to edge well.
The center of gravity (belly button) of the body moves toward the front legs.
It's not good.
So, in the case of duck stance,
bend your body like this and lift your toes up for edging.
If you do the same heel-side turn in a duck stance,
like in a stance where both feet are angled forward,
you'll end up riding forward (your belly button is too far forward). That's not good.
Also, if you try to narrow your back knee inward (inner thigh), you may feel that it puts a strain on your knee.
Even though you are set up in a duck stance,
if you use your legs (knees) like you would in a stance where both legs are angled forward,
your back knee may hurt.
When I do a heel-side turn in a duck stance,
I put pressure on this inner thigh and
rotate my hips (belly button) in the direction of movement.
In other videos, I say, ``Even in duck stance, twist your body in the direction of movement.''
However, when you rotate your hips (navel) forward, the board is pulled by your body, so
the board slides (like a drift turn).
You want to make sure that the board doesn't shift (slide)
even if you rotate your waist (belly button) in the direction of movement.
If you just rotate your hips (belly button) forward, the board will slide, so make
sure to put pressure on your inner thighs (tighten your muscles)
and rotate in the direction of movement.
In this case, it is very important to strengthen the muscles in your inner thighs,
which will prevent the board from sliding.
In that position, make a heel turn.
Furthermore, when you rotate your hips (belly button) in the direction of movement,
the knee of your front leg also tends to rotate in the direction of the turn.
Keep your knees from rotating by engaging your inner thigh muscles.
If the knees are rotated and too much weight is placed on the front leg, it
will be difficult to continue into the next turn.
Avoid rotating your knees.
Shift your weight onto your back leg and continue into the next turn.
Avoid rotating your knees.
Shift your weight onto your back leg and continue into the next turn.
When the board makes a turn,
the nose (front side of the board) always receives resistance from the snow surface, and
the brakes are applied to some extent. This causes the weight to be transferred to the front legs.
If too much weight is placed on the front leg,
it is easy to lose balance and the body tends to be pulled toward the fall line.
Pull your toes up firmly and
stretch the knee of your front leg a little.
If your thighs are not strong,
your knees will easily rotate.
If you do so, the board may slide or get stuck (stag).
When actually making a heel turn,
I use the torsion of the board.
The movement of your body naturally applies torsion to the board.
If you don't rotate your waist (belly button),
this is how the edging will look on the heel side.
That's very unbalanced.
Carving with this form (posture) makes it easy to fall. Imagine
tightening your inner thigh muscles, twisting your waist, and
in this state edge your front foot
while stepping toward the outside of the turn with your back foot.
Rather than carving with the heels of both feet,
rotating your hips (navel) and stepping in this manner
will help stabilize your foot.
When you try to rotate your hips forward in a duck stance,
you may not be able to do it even if you think you're doing it. Only the arms and chest are rotated, the hips are not.
In such cases, it's a good idea to bend the knee of your back leg and push further.
If you use only your heels like this with both feet, it will be difficult to apply pressure to the board.
Step forward with your back leg like this.
Your back leg should rest against the front of the boot.
Rotate your hips forward while bending your ankles to lean against your boots.
This will make it easier for your hips to rotate.
If you find it difficult to bend your back ankle and step forward,
your boots may be too stiff. It's also a good idea to adjust the laces and dials on your boots to loosen them up a bit.
You can also try switching to softer boots. This may make carving easier.
During the heel-side turn,
tighten your thigh muscles, rotate your hips, and lower your
legs toward a high back to increase your edging angle.
If you rotate your hips (belly button) and
maintain a low form (posture), you can create a strong edging.
The board will rise until it is perpendicular to the ground.
It's not like this back overload.
With this form (posture), the board will not be perpendicular to the ground.
Lower your butt firmly to the inside of the turn.
It is not recommended that the pelvis (navel) be placed sideways.
Normally, if your hips are rotated, you can bend your hips firmly and place your head over your front legs, but if your
hips are sideways, you can place your butt over your back legs and bend your hips, but your head will still be over your front legs. Not above.
This makes it difficult to put pressure on the board with your front foot.
It is difficult to carve with this form (posture).
Checking the point again, turn your pelvis (belly button) forward and bend your hips. The butt is on the back leg. head on front legs.
When viewed from the front, your head and buttocks are on the board with your hips bent.
The trick to a heel-side turn is to
tighten the inner thigh muscles and
rotate your hips (belly button).
Bend the knee of your back leg firmly.
Avoid rotating the front knee.
This is not good.
Edging like this.
Instead of moving like this,
pull your toes up and lower your butt.
This movement is very important. Bend your ankle as you press against the front of the boot.
